We are at a place of transformation and few industries will be exempt!  Transforming education will require brave and bold leadership.  Creating the opportunitity for innovation and collaboration is critical.  Peer to peer learning is a powerful way to influence behavior and to ensure there is enough gas in the tank to endure the journey!

A tip of the hat to BOSS!

Board of School Superintendents Announces Cohort Learning to Reduce Stress and Isolation of School District Leaders

School Superintendents are constantly attacked and diminished by many stakeholders. This issue is only accelerating as districts are challenged with depleting resources. BOSS aims to reverse this through cohort learning.

Board of School Superintendent

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) December 30, 2011

School Administrators continue to be under great stress as they conduct the leadership work necessary to improve public education. In a recent national survey conducted by American Association of School Administrators(AASA, 2010), Superintendents report the highest levels of stress in history.

Board of School Superintendents, has seen that this ongoing stress leads to isolation of the School District Superintendent and hinders growth and improvement in public schools. Beyond the personal costs, stress and isolation contributes to superintendent turnover. In some school districts a new superintendent is hired every two or three years. Turnover leads to inconsistency of action and ultimately the chronic under performance of public schools.

BOSS will provide cohort learning and coaching for active school superintendents as the solution to stress and isolation. Isolation takes a physical and emotional toll. Isolation encourages personal defensiveness and potential unhealthy responses to stress. The greater the isolation the less effective the school superintendent becomes. A way out of this common trap is to find a safe place to confide with other leaders. This moves the superintendent from the conditions of fatigue, drained, worn out, down, low energy, and depressed to the abundance of energy, creativity, engagement, courage, and strength.

“Leading schools today calls for a unique and profound leadership profile. A leader that can achieve high results for all students while simultaneously eliminating the achievement gap. Keeping a focus on this goal while also navigating multiple agendas can lead to exhaustion and isolation for any superintendent. BOSS is a place for superintendents to meet together, problem solve, learn and generate and sustain positive, proactive leadership. It's a place that will compel the moral imperative and change that superintendents need today as they work in partnership to achieve results," says Dr. Melissa Krull, a Minnesota Chair for BOSS.

Gary Cohen, CEO and Co-founder of BOSS says, “You cannot address the major issues facing public schools today if the superintendent is withdrawn, worn out and feeling diminished. We believe that in order to provide the required leadership development for School Superintendents so they lead adaptive changes in public schools, you must first address the emotional isolation and stress.”

“School Superintendents who join a Board of School Superintendent Cohort become engaged with other school superintendents who are experiencing similar job stress and isolation. Through a time tested and research based model for cohort learning, BOSS Fellows find their leadership performance improves by reducing the deleterious effects of stress and isolation. The level of confidentiality within this group provides a safe place for leaders to learn while doing a very difficult job,” says Dr. Mark Wolak, President of BOSS.

BOSS partners with national and state organizations, both public and private, who share the commitment to develop leaders and improve outcomes for students in public education.

If you would like more information about Board of School Superintendents please go to BOSS or call 612-204-2044. Board of School Superintendents (BOSS) strategic mission is to Elevate Learners by Elevating Leaders. BOSS is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and founded by Gary B. Cohen and Dr. Mark A. Wolak.

It's time to improve the management/employee interaction. HR - Your job is to help managers make better people decisions, and enhance the quality of the dialogue with employees. HR professionals must ask the questions... “Am I really helping managers to manage more effectively?” and “Am I impacting the employment experience of the employee?”

Insights from Taleo.

Three Key Themes that Emerged from Taleo Europe 2011

by Chris Phillips | December 13, 2011

Taleo Europe 2011

The first ever Taleo Europe customer conference took place in Paris on Tuesday 8th – Wednesday 9th November. With a turnout of almost 300 customers, partners and media, it was a huge success and a lot of fun too! We definitely plan to hold Taleo Europe on an annual basis in future years. One of the great pleasures from the two days for me was that I had the opportunity to have a lot of interesting discussions in a short period of time. In this post I will distill down some of the key themes from both the formal presentations and the informal chat around the (extremely tasty!) Parisian canapés.

1. Business Management and Talent Management Are Converging

Several of the speakers (Michael Gregoire Taleo’s CEO, Laurent Geoffroy of Alcatel-Lucent and Thomas Otter from Gartner) explored this theme, and there were several levels to this discussion. At the macro-organisational level this is about strategic workforce planning. A part of planning for any business strategy should be to plan the impact on the workforce who is going to have to execute that strategy. Do we have the leadership? Do we have the skills needed? Are our best people in the highest impact areas of the workforce?

Taleo Europe 2011 - Taleo CEO Michael Gregoire

However, there is a more operational level at which business and talent management is converging. It is based on the realization that in practice talent is best managed by managers not by HR. The business impact of ‘talent management’ activities sponsored by HR is orders of magnitude greater when they improve the quality of the management/employee interaction. It forces talent management professionals to ask themselves questions like “Am I really helping managers to manage more effectively?” and “Am I materially impacting the employment experience of the employee?”

So just like workforce planning becomes a part of business planning, so talent management becomes a part of day-to-day operational management. The role of HR then becomes to help managers in the business get better at it. Several customers told me that such a mindset shift forces you to start to think more in terms of decision support and less about process. The focus shifts away from making sure managers complete processes like annual reviews or hiring in a timely fashion. You begin to think more in terms of helping managers make better people decisions, and enhancing the quality of the dialogue they have with their employees.

Taleo Europe 2011 - Taleo CEO Michael GregoireAnd that brings me on to the second major theme…

2. The Need For Better ‘Talent Intelligence’ Is Driving Suite Adoption

One powerful way to help a manager make better decisions is to make sure that they are armed with better data or better ‘talent intelligence.’ It is true in every other area of the business and it is true when it comes to people/talent management. Relevant data, put into context, arms a manager with the insight needed to make more informed decisions. Further, when a manager sits down to talk to a current or potential employee that dialogue will be more honest, objective, and productive if both of them have the relevant facts at hand.

Thomas Otter made the point in his excellent presentation that HR and data analytics have not always been natural bedfellows! It certainly raises some questions about the skills that HR will need going forward. It also spotlights the challenges that many organisations have just getting access to the data. Most companies have evolved their systems to be focused on individual processes like recruiting, performance reviews, learning, etc. But if I am a manager I want to be able to understand all the relevant information about an individual if I am to make the right decision about them. If I can’t see all the information about someone in one place I am likely not to bother looking and fall back on my gut feel and personal observations. It is not surprising then that many customers are looking for a more unified, manager- and employee-friendly approach to their talent management systems.

And in fact it’s worse than that. In many organisations, an increasing amount of the information about each individual doesn’t even exist in any system, which brings us to the third major trend…

3. Mobile Devices and Social Networks Are Changing The Way We Work

Several of the presenters talked about the rise of consumer technologies like mobile smartphones and social (or often professional) networks. If talent management means helping managers to manage better, then you really need to give them the tools where it’s convenient to use them. And that increasingly means on their smartphone or through their chosen social and professional networking sites. You also have to make sure that any technology tools you provide are as easy to use as their day-to-day experience of Google, Amazon or Linked-In.

Several people I spoke with were very excited about this because it turns the threatening world of rapidly evolving mobile devices and external social networks into a huge opportunity for HR. If you can give managers and employees useful, easy to use tools that enhance the quality of management for both sides, then they will likely use them…every day. You can then start to collect and consolidate massive amounts of useful data, which in turn enables you to provide better talent management services. A true virtuous circle.

So it seems that all three of these themes are interrelated. At heart they all boil down to an understanding that really influencing the business means improving the way people are managed on a day-to-day basis.

I really love these creativity exercises!  They are simple and easy to complete!

The most creative and innovative people and organizations will WIN, especially going forward. It's that simple.  Trouble is, we're running from meeting to meeting and not doing  things with our minds that foster ideas and great innovation.

Time to incorporate activities like these into your day!  You'll be grateful in the long run!

Here's to creativity and innovation!  Here’s to a positive future.

If you been around me much you know I am very interested in the challenges and opportunities facing the generations in the marketplace today.

Pay very close attention to the "points of interest" in the article and consider the professional opportunities that will be revealed in the very near future!  The #millennials face a very high unemployment rate, so a flood of employment opportunities is exactly what they need!

RT @fastfuture - Rohit Talwar #Ageing #US: "The needs of the retiring baby boom generation will mean a flood of new #employment opportunities" - #CNBChttp://ht.ly/64cCo

Points of Interest:

"My guess is that there could be some 20 million new jobs when it's all said and done because of seniors," says Tim White, managing partner of executive search firm Kaye Bassman.

The Census Bureau says that an American turns 65 years old every 13 seconds and that some 10,000 boomers retire every day. (330 baby boomers turn 65 every hour and 30+ less gen-xers to back-fill the holes created when boomer leave the workplace)

It's estimated that 70 million people will be 65 or older by 2030—nearly doubling the 34 million today.

Ten out of the twenty most rapidly growing industries in the U.S. are in health care. (Great opportunities here Millennials)

"The financial industry is going to see more jobs with seniors thinking about retirement," says White

Technology can also be included on the list, according to Jean Coppola, a professor at Pace University's Seidenberg School of Computer Science.

Real estate should see some benefits, too, as the senior housing industry is projected to at least double from 50,000 communities to 100,000 by 2050— while providing a fairly good income for employees.

Even the legal profession will see a boost, says Rahul Yodh, an executive recruiter specializing in attorney placement.

"There's a demand for attorneys not only because of the aging population but also because they never had as much access to the resources they do now," Yodh explains. "They realize they need sophisticated help for their finances. This trend could go on for years."

Of course, the fact that many seniors are leaving the workforce will create even more job openings, says Tim White.

Senior citizens will account for 20 percent of the U.S. population by 2030. This demographic explosion may wind up helping a struggling economy catch its breath.

Here is my favorite blog  of the week.  It represents an example of unconscious focus that is producing unintentional results! Worse yet, the creativity muscle is not being developed as the marketplace so desperately needs.

RT@Ken Cooper (@kencooperusa)

Creativity is one of the most important attributes needed for successful leaders now and into the future, but guess what, creative leaders are being overlooked.  Learn why in this fascinating blog by  -

Heidi Grant Halvorson

 Forbes http://t.co/jayNM3S

This blog demonstrates how critical it is to call out the attributes needed in successful leaders and organizations going forward.  I’ll talk about each of the critical attributes individually later, but let's start with my list.

The attributes of successful individuals, leaders and organizations now and into the future.

Positive Outcome Focused

Agile

Flexible

Creative

Innovative

Persistent

Connected

Self Driven

Learning Oriented

Collaborative

Relationship Oriented

If leaders and organizations do not call these attributes out and intentionally build and further develop them with their organizations, there will be  trouble on the horizon.  Those that do, will be well equipped to drive the course and steer toward opportunity and away from threats. Leave it to chance and prepare to pay a very high price!

Four generations are together in the workplace for the first time in history.  It is how we choose to work together that will determine our success. All age groups must work diligently at being receptive and involved in the process.

1925 - 1945

Silent Generation

1946 - 1964

Baby Boom

1965 - 1979

Generation X

1980 – 2000

Net Gen, Generation Y, or Millennials

Demographic Truths

In 2008 I read a white paper by international consulting firm Deloitte entitled, “It’s 2008. Where Are Your Employees?” It discussed the impending talent crisis. I was fascinated with the undeniable demographic truths on the horizon:

·       Baby Boomers exiting the workplace in high numbers

·       The tremendously large size of the Millennial Generation

·       The diminutive size of Generation X  and its inability to backfill the spaces left by the departing generation

Simultaneously, I was being bombarded with requests for coaching and consulting regarding the challenges the established generation was experiencing in leading the Millennial Generation.

Economic Recession

Suddenly, and for the next several years, the economic recession cast aside the focus on these truths as organizations struggled to survive. But of course, these demographic trends did not pause and wait for the recession to pass! In the midst of one of the worst economic downturns, many Baby Boomers opted to stay put rather than retire. This only served to put a band-aid on the talent crisis predictions, and for the time being, nothing happened.

The reality is, the talent crisis will once again amp up, the Baby Boomers will regain their confidence and proceed to retire (in droves), and Generation X will not be able to backfill the openings left by the Boomers. This situation will be further complicated by the fact that there has been minimal sharing of knowledge and the Baby Boomers are leaving with critical insight that Generation X needs to carry on.

Leverage the Power of Generations

I believe the best solutions come when all the generations are at the table, collaborating, and coming up with solutions and innovations that leverage the power of the generations.

Unfortunately, this is rare. What is happening in the marketplace is collective eye-rolling—established generations roll their eyes at younger generations, and vice versa. There is fatigue and frustration on both sides of the equation.

I often tell people that a challenge and an opportunity usually dwell within close proximity of each another. That is definitely the case in this situation.  The result?  Solutions are created without collaboration.  Here is an example

Not long ago I received a call from a client asking me to review their new website.  I asked, “Who is your target audience?”  They said males and females ages 18 to 40.

The moment I landed on the website it was obvious it had been built by a group of over-age-40 males. Front and center was a talking head with a crisp shirt and conservative suit yammering gobbledygook. He was preaching corporate-speak on steroids! Fascinating, isn’t it? This is akin to a roundtable discussion on how to target the female purchasing audience without one woman at the table!

The younger generations are more interested in human beings with hearts, personalities, and a bit of humility.  They are not interested in someone who is preaching from a lofty position with eyes cast downward.

If the company had invited the up-and-coming generations to the table, they would have quickly realized what younger professionals like and don’t like.  They would have created a website that would appeal to the target audience with the influence that sage wisdom and decades of experience bring.

This is one of countless examples where collaboration—leveraging the power of generations—would have yielded a superior outcome and a more innovative solution.

I always say that order matters.  We all have something to learn, and we all have something to teach—in that order. If we come from a place of curiosity, where each party says to the other “I want to learn about and understand you,” we would quickly realize that we have more commonalities than differences .  Once common ground is established, we can see our differences as strengths and begin to realize the infinite opportunities that exist with four generations in the workplace.

Multiple generations working together can be leveraged as a source of great potential rather than a cause for tension. I believe that we are in a unique place where sage wisdom blended with new, fresh ideas can create the solutions the marketplace and workplace desperately need.

It is how we choose to work together that determines our success. By finding common ground, respecting differences, and letting go of assumptions, great things can happen!

Laura Goodrich´s”Seeing Red Cars Driving Yourself, Your Team, and Your Organization to a Positive Future ” by Wayne Hurlbert

“You could be getting more of what you want – more new ideas, more teamwork in your department, and a more positive attitude in the company”, writes internationally recognized expert in the field of workplace dynamics and relationships, Laura Goodrich, in her inspirational and very practical book Seeing Red Cars: Driving Yourself, Your Team, and Your Organization to a Positive Future. The author describes how we get more of what we focus on, and shares the tools for enhancing and sharpening the focus on what we really want.

Laura Goodrich points to the very familiar phenomenon of the purchaser of a red car suddenly seeing red cars everywhere. The author recognizes this sudden appearance of red cars as simply a fresh focus on red cars on the road. In fact, the red cars were there all along, but without the focus on them, they went unnoticed prior to the red car purchase. With this change in concentration, writes Laura Goodrich, a dramatic and very noticeable change in outcomes is possible. Unfortunately, as the author describes, people will often concentrate their focus on what they don’t want. The result is that those people also receive the bad things on which they sharpened their gaze. Laura Goodrich shares how the world doesn’t have to be that way, and guides the reader to focus on the desirable outcome, and how this reversal of direction makes all the difference in the world.

Laura Goodrich (photo left) understands that not only can individuals change their outlook, but that entire corporate cultures can be transformed as well. Instead of concentrating on weaknesses, the author demonstrates how entire organization can enhance strengths, increase passion, and develop a more engaged and productive workplace. Combining the change in thinking with the tools necessary to make the transition from a negative focused culture, to that of one where the positive outcome is sought, the author provides a system that provides real bottom line results. While many companies expend their energy on what they believe is preventing problems, the more effective organization creates an atmosphere where overall success is the goal. With this profound difference in organizational culture and behavior, any company can get what it really wants.

For me, the power of the book is how Laura Goodrich utilizes the red car phenomenon effectively to describe how people see and receive what they focus on in life. The author combines effectively the theory of why concentration on anything either good or bad, produces that result, with practical steps on how to change that concentration problem. Laura Goodrich bolsters her theoretical framework with the latest research in how the brain processes information, and how it focuses upon either good or undesirable results. The author shares the tools, including an online toolkit, to effectively rewire the brains of individuals or of entire organizations to effect positive and lasting change.

Along with the theory and practical exercises, Laura Goodrich also shares real world stories of companies who have made the leap to a focus on positive goals. The results of these corporate cultural changes are both dramatic and motivational for anyone seeking to improve morale within the company culture. Engaged and positive employees are also more productive and increase the organization’s revenue and profitability. Happy workers, concentrating on seeing the shiniest red cars in life, are more likely to be creative as well. When innovative thinking is sought, bold new ideas and initiatives seem to arrive out of nowhere. Just like the red cars, those fresh ideas were there all along.

I highly recommend the innovative and results oriented book Seeing Red Cars: Driving Yourself, Your Team, and Your Organization to a Positive Future by Laura Goodrich, to anyone looking for commitment, both individually and on an organization wide basis, to focusing on positive events. Looking for what you really want will surprise and delight the seeker of good things in business and in life.

Read the negative pattern breaking book Seeing Red Cars: Driving Yourself, Your Team, and Your Organization to a Positive Future by Laura Goodrich, and discover how to make positive change with both realistic and effective techniques for personal and organizational transformation. You will be seeing red cars everywhere in the office and on the road of life.

Make the commitment to take it S-L-O-W, but make the decision to DO it!

Starting to take actions to move toward what you want in life often requires moving outside of your comfort zones. This is hard. It feels awkward and can be unnerving. I always advise people to take it S-L-O-W.

In my book Seeing Red Cars I give the example of a client I was coaching who was shy and quiet and typically sat through meetings without saying a word. She wanted that to change. I advised her to start by contributing at least one useful idea in every meeting. She had never spoken up before! This was a stretch, but she agreed to give it a try. I told her people may react with surprise the first time she speaks up, but once she does it the first time she’ll realize it wasn’t so bad and it will give her confidence going into the next meeting. That’s exactly what happened!

I also share the story about the miraculous turnaround of a client who discovered her true passion and prevailed:

I was working with an advanced biomedical company on a 12-week program to help employees focus on the outcomes they were looking for. Carla was an assembly-line worker and was curious about the concepts, and, frankly, they were a little unnerving to her. She cautiously began thinking to herself about her true passions, strengths, and values.

When we were close to the end of the 12-week program, I noticed Carla wanted to speak to me after class. She hung back and waited to have a chance to talk. She finally approached me after everyone had left the room and told me her story. She found the Seeing Red Cars concept (focusing on what you want) intriguing, but it really scared her in the beginning. That was because she realized through the process that she really loves finance and numbers and she wanted to move into the accounting department. She gradually started talking about the idea with her colleagues and manager, and they encouraged her and gave her the confidence to focus on her true interests and values. She finally worked up the courage to apply for the accounting program at a local college.

I had the opportunity to follow up with Carla over the years. She completed her accounting education and moved into the accounting department. Eventually, she moved into a leadership role in accounting before she moved to another organization when she married—you see, she had also identified the type of person she wanted to spend her life with during the original 12-week course and ultimately met that person and moved to another city, where she continued her journey as an accountant.

The reason Carla stuck with her plan and kept pursuing her desires is that she took it one step at a time and slowly built on each small success. It worked for her and it can work for you, too. Start Seeing Red Cars!

If you want to drive yourself, your team and your organization to a positive future, I am excited to offer the process and toolkit that can get you there. Check out the resources at seeingredcarsbook.com.

Header

You’ll be grateful later when you’re clear now about your own wants

Your actions influence those around you, and especially your children. This fact became even more clear to me recently when I attended the funeral for my friend’s father. First, as I was walking through the parking lot, I saw a former coaching client I hadn’t seen in several years. It was a surprise to both of us when we saw each other. My friend’s father’s name was Glenn and my former client, John, was arriving to sing at his service.

My first reflections happened during the service itself. There were two people who spoke at Glenn’s funeral.

  • First was a work colleague and close friend of 30 years.  He spoke of Glenn’s dedicated service and love of work and friendships.
  • Second was Sarah, his granddaughter.  She stepped to the microphone with a quiet confidence and told  funny and moving stories of her grandfather.  She talked about his dedication to family and his love of fishing. Her voice cracked and she pulled us in very closely to her love and loss.

I got an intimate glimpse of a man and his family, although I had never met him.  It caused me to reflect on family and the power of legacy. As I heard the stories of this man, I could see the influence he had had on his daughter, and then his granddaughter—all honest, hardworking and dedicated folks.

At the end of the service I looked up and John, my client, was standing in front of me.  His music had been lovely and I felt so grateful for how he had blessed the occasion. We stepped outside into the sunlight and he began to tell me a story. “Ten years ago you worked with me, Laura, and you asked me, what do you want?  I answered, and you told me that my response was as clear as mud!” I cringed a little at the bluntness of my words, but I didn’t let it show. He continued, “I knew my life was all tangled up and I lacked clarity. Together we untangled my thoughts and my dreams, and I finally was able to articulate what I wanted, personally and professionally, with great clarity!  I found the work hard and at times I did not enjoy it. But now, as I look back on my life, I realize I have accomplished everything I set out to accomplish ten years ago, and more!”

At this point he began to slow down, and the reflection overwhelmed him.  Tears streamed down his face as he told me how he was very proud of his own accomplishments, but even more proud and grateful for of the impact that his personal clarity has had on his son.  John said, "I’m convinced that he would not be where he is today, which is a very good place, if I had not gotten clear about my own desires."

I always say, more important than the words you say to others are your actions!  Others are always watching. I’ve found that people can live with their own mistakes, but abhor the idea that their focus or lack of focus could cause their children to build a life that is either good or not so good. How you live your life affects everyone around you. This was a surprising learning I gained while writing the book Seeing Red Cars.

Doing anything that is counter to building strong and capable children is unthinkable to most parents and is the reason I’ve seen people like John and others work hard to make positive changes in their own lives.

Imagine yourself and your family ten years from now.  Imagine telling me a story that would cause you extraordinary pride.  Imagine being drawn to tears while telling me what you and your family have accomplished, and how many people have been blessed along the way.  This is the power of clarity.  This is the power of knowing what you want both personally and professionally.

Start Seeing Red Cars!   I can’t wait to hear your story!

====================

Are you clear about your personal and professional wants?

How does personal clarity influence others?

Ask your supporters to help identify your weaknesses

Do you have a weakness that may or may not be apparent to you, but is blazingly obvious to those around you?  Examples:

  • Every time a female team member faces a new or unfamiliar situation, she reacts with facial expressions that cross between sheer terror and outright anger. Her coworkers are instantly put-off by her dramatic reaction. The organization is frustrated that her negative response, a reflex for which she is unaware, undermines their efforts to create a change-adaptive culture.
  • A soccer parent on the sidelines gets so emotionally involved in the action on the field that he explodes in uncontrollable rants. It embarrasses his wife, his son, and the rest of the players and parents. It doesn’t matter how many strengths he may have or what they are, because they are overshadowed by his weakness.

I talk a lot about strengths and emphasize their importance, but perhaps equally important is addressing weaknesses. While you may never be able to reverse a weakness, accomplishment of goals relies upon awareness of weaknesses so you can bring them to neutral. And, once you clearly identify areas where you are weak, you can bring in others to work with you who are strong in those areas.

So how do you bridge the gap between a deal-breaking weakness and neutral? Start with awareness. Identify your weaknesses yourself, if you think you know them. Even if you feel like you do know your weakness, ask your supporters for their “take.” When does it come up? What situations bring it to light? What exactly does it look like?

Once you know, you can take action. Pre-plan what your positive response will be and then be alert to situations that trigger negative reactions.  Catch yourself before your instincts take over.  Respond with positive intentions instead.

Contend with your weaknesses and bring them to neutral so when that perfect job, project or opportunity comes knocking, your strengths are able to shine brightly independent of the shadow of a deal-breaking weakness.

If you want to drive yourself, your team and your organization to a positive future, I am excited to offer the process and toolkit that can get you there. Check out the resources at seeingredcarsbook.com.

Wed, 27 Apr 2011 07:31:00 -0700 Seeing Red Cars: Grace figured out why she was feeling uneasy discontent. Now she’s seeking a job that ‘fits’ her http://lgoodrich.posterous.com/seeing-red-cars-grace-figured-out-why-she-was http://lgoodrich.posterous.com/seeing-red-cars-grace-figured-out-why-she-was

Jobs and companies are not one in the same; one you can control, one you can’t

Grace is an advertising professional and managed a department for a large firm. She wondered why she was feeling uneasy discontent. “I was in this state of limbo trying to figure things out,” she explains. “I thought for a while, do I want to leave this industry? Is it me? Is it the company? Am I having a mid-life crisis?”

Grace had been following Laura Goodrich on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook for quite some time, occasionally sending messages and questions. Laura’s book was soon to be published and Laura asked Grace if she would read an advance copy and write a review. It turns out, the experience was perfectly timed.

Following the instructions outlined in the book, “I put together a list of my passions, my strengths, my values and my priorities, and then I did a ‘through my eyes’ evaluation of my company,” says Grace. When she compared her notes side by side, she said, “I determined that I love what I do, I love my team, but I had lost faith in the company. I had always assumed my job and my company were the same thing, but I realized the company is something I can’t control, and my job is something I can control. I had never looked at it that way before.”

Grace reflected on the leadership changes at her company in recent years. “They’re not making changes that are really pushing the organization forward,” she concluded. So she took a closer look at what she really values:  open communication, honesty, fairness, flexibility and open mindedness. Then she asked herself, “How important are my values to me, and what is it about my values that I really relish?” Grace said she realized her values are “my personal brand; it’s who I am. My values are very important to me and I can’t compromise them for anything or anyone.”

So Grace proceeded to seek a new opportunity. She now has a clear picture of the team and organization she wants to join: “I want to make sure the department is highly regarded and has a voice; their opinions count.” She researched companies and cultures, and reached out to people working in those companies to validate her findings. Then she began to tell her story—sharing her passions, strengths and values, and her desire to work in an organization in which there is alignment. She says there are numerous opportunities she would have entertained prior to reading Seeing Red Cars and gaining a clearer understanding about herself.

Grace is now several interviews along in the selection process for a new position. She researched the company and asked questions in the interview such as, “Tell me about the marketing department in your organization. How is the department perceived?” Luckily, says Grace, the interviewer “was very happy and very proud to talk about it.” That gave Grace greater confidence.

Grace told me that even if this opportunity does not work out, she will keep on seeing red cars. “I’m not going to get depressed and focus on the negative. I’m going to focus on the experience and what I learned from the process, and take that information with me and use it for other opportunities.” Grace said the clarity of what she is looking for gives her a greater sense of comfort and trust that it will happen. She will find an opportunity that is right for her. And, she will be happier as a result.

If you want to drive yourself, your team and your organization to a positive future, Seeing Red Cars offers the process and the toolkit that can get you there. Check out these resources at seeingredcarsbook.com.

Header

Don’t let quiet discontent fester; Seek opportunities that align with values!

Beware of disconnects between your personal values and the organizational values of the company you currently work for or are considering joining. Examples:

You value innovation

The organization values tradition

You value transparency

The organization is autocratic

You value collaborative teams

The organization rewards individual performance

I once joined a company on the same day as another woman. Her values were totally aligned with the organization and she thought it was heaven. I felt as though I landed on Mars. The values and attributes I desired were completely different. I stayed for 18 painful months and she recently retired after a long and successful career with that company.

If I had used a tool like this I probably never would have accepted the offer. Here’s how I would have completed this Seeing Red Cars tool at the time we were both hired:

Team or Organizational Attributes

Team or Organizational Values

Personal Values

Highly Traditional

Tradition

Forward Thinking

Control

Consistency

Innovative

Conservative

Systems

Achievement

Happy w/Status Quo

Integrity

Influence

Security

Stability

Courage

If you’re feeling a sense of quiet discontent with your current job, it might help to complete this tool for yourself. Here is a PDF of the tool (You may download an editable PDF free from seeingredcarsbook.com under the Toolkit tab.):

filled_in_tool_for_blog_12.pdf Download this file

Here are ways you can research or questions you can ask to complete the columns:

Personal Values:  Values are those things you hold dear or esteem highly. Think about what you truly value. Here is a list of sample values to get you started:

Abundance

Achievement

Adventure

Appreciation

Boldness

Bravery

Challenge

Execution

Courage

Creativity

Curiosity

Agility

Flexibility

Decisiveness

Determination

Giving

Integrity

Outcomes

Autonomy

Mastery

There are hundreds of values from which to choose. Pick five values that truly resonate with you, and enter them in the Personal Values column.

Answers for the two organization columns can sometimes be found on the company’s website under “About” or “Our Values.” Perhaps there is a letter from the president or CEO, or an annual report. Look for terms that address the organization’s values and attributes and enter them in the appropriate columns. These questions may help:

Team or Organizational Values:

What is important to the company?

What is important to this group?

What gets rewarded?

What is problematic?

What do people pay attention to?

What is most important?

Team and Organizational Attributes:

How does this group function?

What does it reward?

What does it discourage?

How does this group/organization view and respond to change? Innovation? Projects? Leadership?

Now look for similarities and differences between your personal column and the other two. How important are your personal values?  If there’s a lack of alignment, can you live with it or will it drive you crazy?  This analysis may help you make decisions about your current or potential position.

If you want to drive yourself, your team and your organization to a positive future, I am excited to offer the tools that can get you there. Check out these resources at seeingredcarsbook.com.

====================

Do you feel a quiet discontent because your personal values do not align with your job/company?

What does a comparison of your personal values with your team and/or organization tell you?

Sun, 17 Apr 2011 17:51:04 -0700 Leverage the power of generations; it’s a matter of choice http://lgoodrich.posterous.com/leverage-the-power-of-generations-its-a-matte http://lgoodrich.posterous.com/leverage-the-power-of-generations-its-a-matte

Shiftingyears_1200x436

Here is an example:

A strengths assessment provides insight that will guide you

We’ve all heard “Play to your strengths.” It’s not new. It makes sense. Most people say, “Duh.”

The shocking reality is that only 20% of employees say they are using their strengths daily! This fact was proven by the Gallup organization through interviews conducted with more than 1.7 million employees from 101 companies in 63 countries.

Herein lies an opportunity for forward-thinking organizations. Hundreds of assessment tools exist that enable individuals to determine their greatest strengths (two I recommend are Now, Discover Your Strengths and StrengthsFinder 2.0). I recommend that you complete a strengths assessment, and if you’re a manager, have your employees complete an assessment. Once you clarify your strengths, leverage this knowledge to align yourself with the projects, people and initiatives that will allow you to bring the best you have to offer to the tasks at hand. Recognize that it takes work. The Latin core of the word passion means to suffer, thus you need to care about something enough to keep on going at those times when it might be easier to stop or be distracted by something else.

How do you recognize a strength? For starters, it comes easy for you. In fact, it probably comes so easy you take it for granted. We often overlook and underestimate the good that we can do when we are playing to our passions and strengths. It takes a lot less effort than other things, and it brings the best of ourselves to the project or challenge. It’s exactly what organizations need today.

When we are trying to be everything to everyone, it’s easy to end up down the path that keeps us busy and pays the bills but yields little satisfaction and drains us.

When you’re doing work that you’re passionate about, you lose track of time and you’re filled with energy. Look for times and activities in which you lost yourself. Reflect back on your life, even back to your youth. What were you passionate about, and what were you interested in? Knowing this is the place to start. If you don’t know it just yet, stick with it until it reveals itself to you. With the right determination, study, and conversation, you’ll figure it out.

You might feel that you already know your strengths, but I still encourage you to complete an assessment. It will provide insight that will guide you. Once you know your strengths, you can leverage them. You will be able to more easily and clearly articulate how your strengths will serve the project, your team, and the company. Everybody wins.

If you want to drive yourself, your team and your organization to a positive future, I am excited to offer the process and toolkit that can get you there. Check out the resources at seeingredcarsbook.com.
