Seeing Red Cars: Stay focused on wants with vigilant awareness

Program your brain for positive outcomes. Daily mantra: "Focus on what I want. Control  what I can."

Our natural, unconscious tendency is to focus on what we fear and are trying to avoid. It's been happening throughout our lives and it is ghastly hard to change. Why? Because when we aren't thinking intentionally, our thoughts "default" to worry and fear. It's an unconscious reaction.

It takes conscious, intentional thoughts and actions to focus on what we want – and to maintain that focus. It's hard. It takes work and vigilant awareness. But it is well worth the effort.

Start by deciding what you want, both personally and professionally. Write it down.  Think about it throughout the day. Make up your mind that you will focus on the outcomes you want in your life. Moments of stress and moments of change are ideal situations to jog your mind back to awareness. Catch yourself before your emotions get the best of you. These are the times when the natural tendency to focus on what you don’t want typically bubbles up to the surface and consumes you. Knowing how you behave and how you respond to stress gives you the awareness you need to deal with these situations. When change occurs or you’re confronted with a stressful event, you need to immediately respond, “What do I want?” The critical question you have to ask is, “What can I control?”

A daily mantra that will serve you well:  "Focus on what I want.  Control what I can."
